RAFIQUE RASHID
pic
by Wong Horngyih
A veteran of the Malaysian music
scene and one of the pioneers of the local independent
singer/songwriter genre Rafique Rashid started out in 1978 and moved
around the PJ/KL pub and hotel scene for a few years before busking
around Europe and Australia.
He has also written and produced
music for many local and international theatre, dance and stage
productions; formed and played in an aboriginal fusion band called Akar
Umbi and co-founded the KL jazz club No Black Tie wherein he began
exploring the field of live sound engineering.
He developed a reputation for
combining music with satirical lyrics that typically included
commentaries on local and international politics, current affairs and
Malaysian social idiosyncracies; usually via spoofs of well known
tunes. He later expanded his repertoire with original songs, some
comedic, some not.
He is currently in
semi-retirement and spends most of his time doing song arrangements for
young local singer/songwriters and only very occasionally performs live
either for charity or just for the hell of it.
Zalila
Lee writes toe-tapping songs about thoughts, feelings, and
circumstances. Seated with her guitar, she sings tunes filled with
rhythmic guitar punctuations – through a crossbreed of plucking,
strumming, and palm-thumping. You’ll be hearing a mix of grooves from
Blues to Indie Rock, with a steady staple of Alternative Folk. Currently
in the process of recording a 6-track EP, ‘Shadows’
is set to be released in the near future.

SQUARECIRCLES
Geometrically
challenged … defiantly out of synch with trends … perhaps
even belonging to another time in musical history. SquareCircles was
formed in late 2008, when a wave of political change had scythed
through Malaysia. This turn of events and the country’s unique social
flavour influenced the band’s lyrical approach, which varies between
contemplative and tongue-in-cheek.
The
band gigged with its original songs at various Klang Valley
venues, including No Black Tie, and even found itself performing on the
fringe stages of the Penang
Island Jazz Festival in late 2009, much to
its surprise.
Events
gradually coalesced into SquareCircle’s
debut CD, Immediately Seek
Attention, which took more than two years to finally find its
way out
of the pressing plant. So here it is, then … open to
interpretation and unrepentant in its musical direction (or lack of,
depending).
The
album was entirely self-financed - well, actually, borrow
funds - and recorded, mixed and mastered in the home studios of various
band members.
Its
cover was conceived and designed by Tapa, well known for his artwork on
numerous Malaysian rock albums over the past three decades.
Immediately
Seek Attention, which comprises eight tracks, is priced at
RM24.90.
The
band? Just a bunch of guys who’re crazy enough about music to
want to play a gig at the end of a busy day at the office.

THE PANDA HEAD CURRY?
The Panda Head Curry were a rock
band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named
“Panda Head Curry”, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals
and occasional guitar), General Panda, The (guitar and keyboards),The
Lord Panda (bass guitar and backing vocals) and The Baby Panda! Cat
(drums and percussion).
The Panda Head Curry rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock
influences to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk
movement of the late 1970s. According to music critic Jon Savage, the
band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy". Their
self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, drew the attention of
the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. The Panda Head
Curry's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on
Wilson's independent record label, Factory Records, and drew critical
acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success,
vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal
difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis of
epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live
concerts, and often had seizures during performances.
On the eve of the band's first American tour in May 1980, Curtis
committed suicide. The Panda Head Curry's posthumously released second
album, Closer (1980), and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became
the band's highest charting releases. After the death of Curtis, the
remaining members continued as “The Panda Head Curry?”, achieving
critical and commercial success. http://www.pandaheadcurry.com
JES IBRAHIM
Very
young and certainly up-and-coming, Jes is the leading light of Tree Theatre, a band which is
partly music, partly theatre. Playing chordal lead and singing
with an intense, sweet voice, he has written some stunning songs about
environmen tal issues, one of which - Empty Earth - is the leader song
on WWF's Earth Hour album,
released by Universal Music,
available from wwf.org.my and most
record stores in Malaysia
FRANCIS WOLF
The
main member of Spunky Funggy,
one of the seminal punk bands of the late
1990s who made one of the great albums of that period, Smile for the
Revolution, Wolf now likes to perform on his own, often on the broken
pavemnets of worn out Kuala Lumpur and other sities in Australia,
Thailand, Indonesia, you name it. A wandering, romantic, minstrel
figure with a wonderful sense of humour that lifts you out of the mire
of poverty and hopelessness into a world of..well, broken relationships
and romantic visions, dancing melodies and inviting vocals. http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/FrancisWolf
