London Gigs
For 5 weeks from the end of March to berginning of May we were in London.  The warm weather ran away as soon as we got there, so it was waiting for buses in bitter winds, wearing coats, scarves and gloves.  Nevertheless
we had an enjoyable time in UK  performing in Open Mics and 4 main spots over 5 weeks.  Thanks to all who enabled us to perform, to David Sherwood, Rob Thom and Xochitl, as well as all who came to the gigs, thanks for making those bus, tube or bike journeys.  Thanks to Phil Davies for helping us with venues and lending equipment and also performing with us, and thanks to Jeremy Turner and Michael Dunnigan and Louise Loft for doing that too.  Thanks to Tom Poslett for musical hospitality and lifts and to Tom, Rob, Eiks, Michael & Louise and everyone who entertained us with their own music.  Oh and Sam Dugdale for his masterful humourous songs and the pics he sent us.  Wish we could have got to Gloucester but maybe next year in a better season with
WARMER WEATHER! (Oh, and thanks for the loan of the bike Michael).

The Vinyl didn't play for family reasons so we started off the show (which was just as well as there were only 2 of us whereas the rest were bands with drums and overdrive guitar and all that.  But the audience were really attentive and appreciative adn liked our other material - apart from  WISH YOU WERE HERE by the Floyd which really went down well.  I was so relieved I didn't make any "unforced errors" as they say in tennis.  We certainly rehearsed it until blue in the face (so we wouldn't be red in the face during performance time.  The rest of the evening proved to be entertaining and socially buzzy with the elderly Pink Floyd fanship turning up with due solemnity, one complaining that it was not ALL Pink Floyd, not approving of all this original dross fillers.  Pitahari and Phlox were the highlights - Phlox did a performance of Echoes.  And there was a real light show, flashing away to the right of us as we played.  It felt like being back in the Crypt in Notting Hill in the 60s with the Third Ear Band and other dissonant experimenters.  WOW!  Thanks Hakim with that paternal air of assurance - everything did tunr out alright - there was a fair sized audience and good sound system.  Check out the Doppel cafe if you want to put on a gig, a fine place to do it.

15 July 2012

Celebrating 10 Years of Open Mic glory! An appreciation night for media and musicians who have graced the
DoPPelganger stage over the past decade! So we're declaring 15 July OPEN MIC DAY!
Valhalla Open Mic was started off by two friends - DJ Beryl and Jasmine Low at a club called Liquid Bar in Central Market in 2002.
Every Thursday night, musicians, dancers, singers even drag queens would grace the platform to showcase their talents.
From 2005 onwards, DJ Beryl became quite busy with her advertising job so Jaz continued the open mic nights, under the moniker - Doppelganger Open Mic. We invite YOU to be a part of this special day where friends come together.
Featuring DJ Beryl, Peter Hassan & Markiza, Ray Cheong, Jes Ebrahim, Ady Suwardy,
Reza Salleh

This is the 2nd of Az Samad series of Open Mic gigs at The Venue in The Pavilion.  We have the intention of being there and PERFORMING if nothing gets in the way.  So hope you will come and especially if you are a musiician (s) as U2 CAN PLAY JUST SIGN UP THE LIST!
we are intending to be just humble open-mic-ers, no reputation either good or baed just completely NEW performers that you've never heard of before!
Well we played 2 songs this time: Refugee & Return to Forever (cover: Millie Riperton)  Mar sang the lead both times, but I couldn't seem to sing in tune, maybe because of very strong delay - yes I'm certain it was the delay (bad singer blames his equipment ha ha!

"The Open Mic was one of the best open mics I’ve ever been to. The quality of the open-mic’ers were ridiculously high!" - by Open Micer Michael Chen

this was a paid gig (very rare these days but very welcome - our gratitude is immense, thanks Chaswood for thinking about the breadr and the butter when it comes to musicians
We finally had to say good bye to our no longer trustworthy D5 which for some reason plays perfectly well at home but when you put it through a sound system it statrs cutting out and farting.  Keyboard repairer tells us it is a chip which Roland can't renew as they have stopped making them
Anyone having an old D5 they are not using.  We will buy it off you (providing it works of course)

This was a truly magnificent gig, organised by Sheena Baharuddin, all the artists taking part were poignant and showed high creative talent
Thank you Sheena we are honoured to have taken part in such a fine gig

Ray Cheong asked us to take part in a show organised by him on the main stage of Publika in Solaris Dutamas

we were honoured as other artists included Rafique Rashid, Bizhu & Remy J (who was awesome)
But we had some sound problems, as the sound engineer didn't seem to be able to work the monitors so I couldn't really hear anything but Mar's rather shrill piano
Sorry it was a bad perfomance from us with loads of mistakes
But our friends were very fair and gracious and stayed for most of our set of 5 songs.  Thanks you so much

DOPPEL CAFE , Annexe, Central market, Kuala Lumpur Wednesday 19th December 2012

This gig organised by Saiful and Leong and Abdul Wahhab.  Well attended with some interesting bands performing accoustically, this was the first time in living memory that I was performing WITHOUT A GUITAR!
This was due to my incurring aqn infection in my left index finger (if it had been the RIGHT it might have been possible to weild a pick)
This infection made my finger swell up and I am still recovering, on heavy anti-bios after 2 stints in hospital on drips and  having my finger cut open twice
and costing several thousand ringgit Malaysia as these tough ABs don't come cheap in a private hospital
which I went to because the Abs being dispensed by the first govt subsidised hospital were not strong enough and the infection was spreading down my finger
The specialist warned me there was a possibility that I might LOSE MY FINGER!
What?  This was for a guitarist indeed serious.  Wow
Cannot trifle with pathogens
They have had a few thousand more evolutionary years than us
coming back to the gig, we were well received.  We sang "Mercy" and "Refugee" and "Crazy Heart" (if I remember right)
Thanks Saiful & Co, your new wife, Jaz Low and all who contributed to the organisation and sound
